Ulster County committee delays creation of chief deputy county clerk position

The Rules, Laws, and Government Services Committee of the Ulster County Legislature voted July 9 to postpone for one month a resolution that would establish a chief deputy county clerk position and reclassify an existing deputy county clerk.

Chair Levine moved the postponement so members could review a Baker Tilly salary study the chair said had just been returned to the county. "I have not had an opportunity yet to to see this," the chair said, explaining he wanted committee members to have time to examine the report before taking action. Legislator Nolan seconded the motion.

Legislator Peters urged colleagues to study the report and come prepared to decide next month so the county clerk's office could proceed with hiring. Several members confirmed they had no objection to delay. The committee voted unanimously to postpone the resolution by one month.

The postponement delays any budget amendment or personnel reclassification tied to the proposed position; committee members said they expect to take up the matter again at the next meeting after members have reviewed the salary study.
