The Rules, Laws, and Government Services Committee voted July 9 to set a public hearing for Aug. 18, 2026 on proposed Local Law No. 13 of 2026, which would opt Ulster County into a full real property tax exemption for seriously disabled veterans.
Legislator Peters, one of the sponsors along with Legislator Lopez, said the sponsors had sent a memorializing letter to the state asking for adjustments to the statute and that "they responded in the affirmative." The committee's reading noted the local law would amend Chapter 312, Article 11 of the county code to add a section for the full exemption for seriously disabled veterans; municipalities must take an affirmative opt-in vote to implement the exemption locally.
Legislator Nolan moved to set the hearing; Legislator Murray seconded. The committee approved the motion unanimously.
The hearing will give residents and municipalities an opportunity to comment before the Legislature considers adoption of the local law.
