Poweshiek County treasurer urges board to consider adding motor-vehicle staff amid vacancy

Poweshiek County Treasurer Jennifer Anderson told the Board of Supervisors at its July 6 meeting that her motor vehicle office is short-staffed and asked for permission to hire an additional employee.

Anderson said she is close to filling a current vacancy and wants the motor vehicle office staffed with four employees and the driver's license office staffed with two. She told the board the position had been removed when the offices were expected to be combined, but "after more consideration, there is no space big enough to combine all the Treasurer's offices," so she is asking to restore staffing levels.

Board members said money for an additional employee is not in the current budget and declined to approve the hire immediately, but they encouraged Anderson to continue efforts to fill the existing vacant position. Anderson provided the board with information on revenue generated by motor vehicle and driver's license services and the number of individuals served in the driver's license office; specific figures were provided to the board but were not recorded in the minutes.

The board did not take formal action on hiring beyond approving routine agenda items and other motions during the session. The matter will return to the board for further consideration when budget implications can be resolved.
