State health officials investigate rise in Cyclospora cases; CDC has recorded multi‑state outbreaks

State health officials in Arkansas say they are investigating an uptick in confirmed cyclospora infections and are trying to determine whether local cases are connected to a larger national increase.

Cyclospora is a parasite most often spread through fresh produce contaminated with feces from an infected person or animal. The CDC has recorded outbreaks in multiple states this year but officials told the station no single food source has been identified that links all illnesses.

Arkansas has confirmed about 70 cases since 2020, the broadcast reported. Health officials said symptoms can be severe and last longer than a typical stomach bug; they urged anyone experiencing prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms after eating fresh produce to consult a primary-care physician.

Public-health officials recommended basic precautions, including thorough handwashing and washing fruits and vegetables before eating, while investigators work to identify any common sources.
