Select Board interviews applicants about town resource limits and sustainability priorities

The Natick Select Board on July 9 explained a streamlined interview process for roughly eight committee-appointment candidates and asked each applicant a standard set of questions mailed in advance.

One applicant responding about the Community Preservation Committee said most CPC projects will involve town resources and that projects lacking town match or capacity are likely to be deferred. The applicant said she would prioritize "once in a generation" projects at a higher rate when comparing proposals.

Another applicant discussed sustainability and outreach, saying "culture change follows culture change" and that many residents are unaware of available incentives. The applicant urged helping homeowners make informed heating and electrification choices at natural replacement points to avoid long-term fossil-fuel lock-in.

When a board member noted that sustainability initiatives can be costly during tight personal and municipal budgets and asked how applicants would respond, an applicant acknowledged the concern as fair and recommended evaluating investments over their full lifecycle rather than focusing solely on upfront costs. "Efficiency and electrification reduce operating costs, improve resilience, and and avoid future expenses," the applicant said, and added that she would prioritize projects accordingly.

The board did not make appointment decisions during the meeting; interviews were conducted in the order listed on the agenda and applications and resumes were made available to the public in the meeting packet.
