Traffic safety committee approves red-curb extension at 2000 McKinley Avenue to aid truck visibility

The National City Traffic Safety Committee voted to install an extended red-curb (no-parking) zone near the driveway at 2000 McKinley Avenue to improve visibility and turning clearance for trucks entering and exiting onto Cleveland Avenue.

Cynthia Quinones, traffic safety chair, said staff recommended the extension after engineering review and site visits. Committee staff described the change as an extension of the existing red curb by roughly 14 to 33 feet on the driveway approach; staff estimated the net loss at about one on-street parking space.

Committee members asked whether the change would worsen parking shortages and whether the truck conflicts occurred during business hours. Rafael Patero, committee member, said he had observed truck parking at the location earlier in the day and that the improvement would likely help truck circulation and make the nearby bike facility safer.

After discussion, a member moved to accept staff’s recommendation and the chair called the question; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote as announced at the meeting. The committee did not identify any required follow-up tasks beyond directing staff to implement the curb marking.
