Planning commission schedules Aug. 13 public hearings on mural rules, indoor recreation in M‑1

The Garden City Planning Commission voted July 9 to schedule public hearings Aug. 13 on two proposed zoning ordinance amendments: new mural standards and rules to allow certain indoor recreation uses in the M‑1 zoning district.

On murals, staff presented revised text that would permit murals on commercial buildings with a maximum mural size of 500 square feet and a proposed cap defining message units at 10 percent of a permitted mural area. The commission approved placing the revised mural ordinance on the August 13 public hearing agenda.

On indoor recreation, staff described a narrow amendment that would allow indoor recreation uses (examples cited include health/exercise clubs and indoor sports like pickleball) in M‑1 as a permitted use when they exclude spectator seating; indoor recreation with spectator seating would require special land use approval and compliance with parking standards. Commissioners approved scheduling the public hearing for the same August meeting.

Both items will be noticed for public comment and return to the commission after the August 13 hearings for further action.
