Native American resident and others urge context after Declaration reading at Lake County supervisors meeting

During public comment, Sky Lehi (Hillsborough Family Farms) said the board's reading of the Declaration of Independence — including the phrase he quoted as "merciless Indian savages" — recalled generations of mistreatment of Native Americans. He described personal family history and said the reading underscores why citizens come to meetings to press for government accountability.

"If you are going to honor the nation's founding document, you should also honor its accuracy," Sky Lehi said, noting a typographical error in the packet and urging the board to remember the contradictions in the nation's history. Other commenters said the reading could be an opportunity to add commentary or historical context rather than uncritically celebrating the past.
