At a Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting, Parks and Recreation Director David gave a wide-ranging report on the department s summer work, praising staff and volunteers and outlining maintenance, tree-planting and cost-savings measures.
David credited events coordinator Jennifer Sandoval and the department s small maintenance crew for support to community events this summer, including the city s Liberty Days and a large July 4 parade and fireworks. He said the in-house team handles everything from Civic Center upkeep to pool oversight and trail maintenance. "We do the absolute best that we can to stretch every dollar that we get," David said.
The director enumerated specific maintenance activity at Sunset Park and other sites: aeration, weed treatments, sod patching, playground inspections in line with the playground handbook, and servicing a solar-powered restroom. He highlighted trail work on the Eagle Trail and Turnback Canyon, noting benches built in-house and efforts to improve wayfinding.
David said the department has prioritized tree plantings this year and reported that roughly 35 trees have been planted with 30 more on site for future installation. He listed several budget comparisons the department used to illustrate in-house savings: a vendor estimate for bleacher canopies of about $85,000 that, according to staff, was completed for $47,000; a pool-furniture replacement quoted at $16,000 that the department said it completed for about $7,700; and a planned Veterans Memorial walkway slab and flagpole project the director said will be done for under $5,000.
Committee members praised the staff s "fantabulous four" and the department s responsiveness. The meeting record shows committee members repeatedly commended David for building the program, noting improved conditions across sports fields, trails and park amenities.
Next steps David highlighted include finalizing Turnback Canyon trail markers and pursuing grant reimbursement for that project, continuing tree plantings and completing planned field renovations ahead of the fall seasons. He also told the committee the department will help promote an online parks master-plan survey to gather public priorities.
The committee did not take a formal vote on these items; the meeting continued into presentations from youth sports leagues and a broader parks master-plan discussion.
