Council raises short-term rental map, park signage and chip-seal complaints; city staff to follow up

Norton Shores — During council comments on July 7, 2026, council members raised several local issues and asked staff for follow-up, including park signage, short-term rental (STR) mapping, road-surface complaints and community events.

Council Member Halloran said the new sign at the city soccer complex no longer includes the Smitty VanderPlow name and suggested restoring it because the land was donated. Halloran also raised safety concerns about delivery, trash and lawn-service vehicles parking in travel lanes; Mayor Nelund said those vehicles should pull beyond the fog line to avoid creating traffic hazards.

Council Member Olson asked about the locked gate at the Hile Recreation baseball fields. City Administrator Anthony Chandler said he would investigate and clarified that the gate is closed but not locked. Olson also sought an update on Life EMS; Mayor Nelund said the proposal was approved unanimously and that the proposal should be sent to the city soon.

Council Member Hylland requested that staff provide a map showing approved and contested STR properties; Chandler said the staff could provide the map but noted it is a fluid document as applications change and that the northwest quadrant has reached capacity while new applications have slowed. Hylland also shared complaints about recent chip seal on Porter Road and Randall Road; Jim Murphy said he had not received complaints directly but would consider different options for future road projects. Council Member Sowa reported heavy Lake Harbor Trail use over the holiday weekend, encouraged sign-ups for Arts & Drafts (she said she had 11 runners) and Mayor Nelund asked council members to promote the event. Doug Hughes said the MADL director position was accepted and will begin Aug. 1, and that he can return to being chairman.

Why it matters: these are locally focused operational and quality-of-life matters that direct staff follow-up — signage restoration, access to recreational fields, enforcement or traffic guidance, STR monitoring and road maintenance decisions.

Next steps: City Administrator Chandler said staff will provide the STR map and investigate the Hile Recreation gate and chip-seal complaints; no formal council motions or votes were recorded on those items.
