Emergency Management Director and fire coordinator Matt McBride told the steering committee he has been seeking a replacement engine for Eastland Fire Department and identified a used 2001 Ferrara engine offered at $20,000 plus shipping.
McBride explained the county has previously taken a mix of donated and purchased used apparatus; he argued that with grant funding scarce a used truck could be a practical near‑term improvement while the county pursues longer‑term options for newer equipment. He also outlined repair needs for other county apparatus and recommended moving ahead with repairs and the possible purchase using an 80/20 cost‑share formula (county 80 percent / department 20 percent).
The steering committee approved forwarding an 80/20 recommendation to the budget committee for up to $16,000 in repairs and up to $20,000 toward a truck purchase. The budget committee then approved funding those items consistent with the 80/20 split; commissioners asked McBride to work with budget staff on appraisals, shipping costs and any necessary procurement steps.
No purchase was completed at the meeting; McBride said the department and chiefs would review the vehicle and could decline if it was not suitable.
