Morgan County Schools gets construction updates; district holding $200,000 retainage on Bryceville project

Mr. Elliott, the district’s construction lead, briefed the board on four active school projects and timelines for athletic and site work. "We have a final set for read on July 20," he said about Bryceville High School, and added that remaining tasks include finishing sod, rolling the fiber, completing press boxes and running power to scoreboards. He said the district is holding $200,000 in retainage "over their head" to ensure those punch‑list items are finished.

The presentation included aerial and close‑up photos of stadiums, concession stands, bleachers and new parking areas. Mr. Elliott listed a financial figure of $2,295,000 in the slide materials when discussing site costs for one project. "The parking lot's striped now," he said while walking the board through the images.

On Brewer High School, Mr. Elliott told the board that paving is scheduled to be completed July 20 and that the soccer and track complex is scheduled for completion on Aug. 5; he described a previously canceled final inspection and said the contractor has adjusted the contract completion date to Aug. 5, 2026 to account for weather and change‑order days. "So the paving will be done July 20," he said, adding that the schedule should not interfere with opening school.

He said the Maxwell (project) work is ahead of its original Aug. 23 completion date, with remaining items limited to bleachers, locker‑room fixtures and concession touch‑ups. "They're under budget and want to finish early," he said.

For West Morgan High School, Mr. Elliott said the contract completion is listed as March 13, 2027, with the contractor targeting Feb. 15, 2027. He noted the baseball and softball turf fields could be ready by Thanksgiving, while a separate steel athletic building must be submitted to the state for plan stamping and fabrication, a process that will affect schedule.

Board members praised progress during brief comments; no formal motions or votes were taken during the construction presentations. The work session transitioned to the business meeting at 5:00 p.m.
