Robin Lady elected chair; Kyle McDaniel chosen as vice chair as board adopts organizational appointments

Robin Lady was elected chair of the Fairfax County School Board following nominations and a roll/voice vote at the board's annual organizational meeting on July 9. Superintendent Reed opened nominations and members spoke to support Robin Lady and Dr. Riccardi Anderson. The clerk announced the tally as 7 in favor, 3 opposed and 1 abstention, giving Lady the majority and the chair's gavel.

The board then proceeded to elect a vice chair. Two nominees — Kyle McDaniel and Matteo Dunn — addressed the board. Kyle McDaniel was elected vice chair by a vote the clerk recorded as 7–4.

In the organizational portion of the meeting the board also voted on a package of administrative arrangements. The board approved a motion that set board member salaries at $48,000 per year and the chair's salary at $50,000, authorized reimbursement of travel at employee rates, and set compensation and expense-reimbursement guidelines for the student representative. The motion included appointments of the superintendent's designee (Marty Smith through July 31, 2026, and Dr. Francis Ivy effective Aug. 1, 2026), clerk and deputy clerk appointments, delegation of signing authority for certain legal documents, retention of outside law firms, and the appointment of an impartial hearing officer. The clerk announced that the motion carried unanimously, 11–0.

Board members framed the votes as setting the governance structure for the coming year. Lady, in brief remarks after her election, said she would ground decisions in three questions — how actions affect students, staff, and families — and described her intent to emphasize stewardship, strategy and listening. Dr. Riccardi Anderson thanked colleagues for the nomination and urged collaborative leadership from whoever was elected.

What happens next: The board's organizational motions and the new chair/vice chair take effect immediately for governance purposes; several administrative assignments (including superintendent designees) will take effect on the dates specified in the motion.
