School board adopts standard calendars for 2027–29 after debate over survey weight and instructional weeks

The Fairfax County School Board voted to adopt the 2027–2029 standard school year calendars at its July 9 meeting after a staff presentation and extended member questioning about survey methodology, five‑day instructional week targets and professional work days.

Superintendent Reed and staff described the calendars as implementing the board’s recently revised standard‑school‑year policy and explained staff considered survey responses (33,389 parents/caregivers and 14,402 staff respondents), state requirements and the goal to maximize full five‑day instructional weeks while protecting common breaks. Staff said the proposed calendars provide 27 full five‑day instructional weeks in one draft and 26 in the other for the covered years, reflecting policy constraints and calendar math.

Board members pressed staff on how the survey responses were weighted, how the calendars align with neighboring jurisdictions and how professional workdays and early‑release durations were determined. Members asked for additional detail on survey weighting and for year‑by‑year projections; staff responded that survey design and research methods were handled by the division research team and that more-detailed analyses and calendar work (including a calendar review committee) will continue.

Following debate, the board adopted the calendars (final recorded vote 10–1). Members stressed that implementation will be phased and that communications to families will follow promptly after the approved calendars are posted online.

What happens next: Approved calendars will be published on the FCPS website; staff said they will convene a calendar review committee to continue refining out‑year plans and will publish associated work calendars for employees before the start of the year.
