Lake Station council advances business-license fee to $75 on first reading

The Lake Station City Council approved a motion on first reading to amend the business-license fee ordinance and set the fee at $75 (amendment from $50 to a proposed $150) for first reading consideration.

Council member S5 made the motion to amend the proposed ordinance and a second was recorded. During discussion, councilmembers compared neighboring-city fees and debated enforcement mechanisms and the potential effect on small businesses. One councilmember noted the city could enforce nonpayment by temporarily suspending an unlicensed business if they do not comply with the ordinance.

Council President S1 summarized the enforcement point: "By law, if people don't follow the ordinance and you give them a couple of opportunities to pay and they don't pay, by law, their business can be shut down temporarily until they pay the business license fee," he said.

The motion for first reading passed with a roll-call result recorded as four yes votes and one abstention. The ordinance will return for a second reading at a later meeting, at which time the council can adopt the final fee or alter the amount. City staff said they will prepare the formal ordinance text reflecting the $75 fee and related language for the second reading.
