Wentzville board holds first reading on e‑bike and motorized device rules for campuses

The Wentzville R‑IV board on June 18 held a first reading of two proposed policies that would restrict riding nonlicensed motorized devices—such as many e‑bikes and scooters—on district campuses.

Presenters said the policies (new policy 2651 and 5226) would not prohibit students from arriving at school on an e‑bike but would require them to dismount and walk the device while on campus to reduce injury risk and property damage. The board noted exceptions for assistive devices used by students with disabilities and said the policy language would not restrict parental use of golf carts to drop off children.

Board members asked whether the district’s definitions align with municipal ordinances—presenters said Wentzville’s policy is broader than O’Fallon’s tiered definitions and that enforcement will require a code of conduct and likely some short‑term supervision resources. The policy remains at first reading; no final vote was taken at the June 18 meeting.
