Veterans Committee forms monument subcommittee and reviews account balance

The Miami Lakes Veterans Committee voted to form a subcommittee to review progress and accelerate completion of the town's veterans monument.

The move followed a presentation by a committee member who proposed the subcommittee would inventory prior work, recruit professionals and business partners, get accurate cost estimates, and pursue grant funding to finish the project within about one year if adequately resourced. "My motion is to form a subcommittee to help get this monument completed," the committee member said during the discussion.

A staff member reported the monument account contains funds from prior events (referred to in the transcript as "$35.02 68") and said a separate transfer of $16,590.50 agreed earlier remains pending council approval and required paperwork. Committee members said the $35,000 figure represents reindeer-run transfers and other fundraising and asked staff to confirm the exact balance and the status of the council motion needed to move the pending transfer.

Committee members emphasized fundraising and grant-seeking as essential next steps. One member said assembling documented fundraising history and endorsements would improve the committee's ability to secure grants and matching funds.

The committee approved creation of the subcommittee and agreed to set an initial meeting date at the committee's next regular meeting to plan next steps, assign tasks, and prepare materials for grant applications and any council paperwork.

The committee did not adopt a final timeline for construction at the meeting beyond the subcommittee's charge to produce an actionable plan; staff agreed to report back with verified account balances and the status of the pending council transfer.
