Advisory board approves holiday week Styrofoam collection pilot

Staff proposed that New Albany pilot a one‑day Styrofoam take‑back event, modeled on programs in neighboring communities and run in partnership with SWACO. The board discussed logistics (which types are accepted, how items should be packaged, volunteer and staff needs), frequency (one event initially, with the possibility of quarterly collections), and where to host the drop off given service center construction constraints.

Board members recommended clarifying accepted materials (food‑service containers vs. larger packing foam and peanuts) and noted that other communities use Gaylord boxes or super sacks. Staff estimated the modest cost to haul collected material would be approximately $125 (U‑Haul) and said the advisory board’s budget could absorb that expense.

A motion to hold a Styrofoam collection during the week between Christmas and New Year’s was moved, seconded and approved by the board. Staff will refine logistics (site, signage, volunteer shifts) and coordinate with SWACO and public‑works resources.
