Sherwood secures DNR park aid application; village moves to buy parkland

Sherwood — Village trustees advanced plans to acquire and develop new parkland, authorizing a state DNR aid application and approving the land purchase contingent on funding.

Over several meetings in 1981 the board discussed and then approved applying for Department of Natural Resources outdoor recreation aids to support park landscaping and development. The board adopted a resolution authorizing Village President Clarence Zahringer to sign and act on behalf of the Village in the DNR application process and committed village funds sufficient to complete the project.

The village negotiated and approved terms to purchase approximately 5.673 acres for park use; an archaeological survey was completed and recovered two arrowhead tips but not enough evidence to halt park work. The DNR grant was expected to cover a substantial portion of landscaping costs and required the village to maintain the facilities and follow state and federal rules; the board discussed bidding requirements and use conditions for federal funds.

Board members also discussed park uses including a Jaycees skating rink, rodeo staging and community events; they asked staff to prepare plans that accommodate those uses while complying with DNR rules. The board set a process to accept bids for construction components once grant funding and property closing were finalized.

Next steps: the village will finalize the DNR application, proceed with bidding for development work once grants are secured, and coordinate any required archaeological mitigation based on the survey findings.
