Siskiyou economic development team urges nominations for Opportunity Zone 2 during short state window

Representatives of the Siskiyou Economic Development Council updated the Board on the state's Opportunity Zone 2 nomination process and encouraged the county to prepare recommended census-tract nominations.

Tanya Douse (speaker 12/13), speaking for the local economic development team, said the application window is very short and the state has asked counties to submit proposed tracks; the county has 12 eligible census tracts that could be nominated. Douse said the state process is competitive and that the county is developing criteria to identify strong candidate tracks.

Why it matters: Opportunity Zone designations can attract investment and tax incentives to selected tracts; the board's participation in recommending tracks is advisory to the state process but can shape local economic development priorities.

What’s next: County staff and the economic development team will continue refining competitive criteria and supporting any formal submission to the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development while keeping the board apprised of the tight timeline.
