Sherwood approves final garage payments but flags noncompliant utility hookups

Trustees repeatedly approved certificates for payment and change orders for the new municipal garage project in early 2009, while also confronting construction defects involving water and sewer lateral hookups.

The Board authorized payment for completed work but also insisted contractors re-excavate and reinstall noncompliant laterals.

What happened: McMahon Associates informed the general contractor that work done November 26 by subcontractor Gersek Excavating produced noncompliant lateral connections to the new municipal garage. The village required reinstallation to Village of Sherwood Municipal Utilities Codes and Standards and directed testing and televising of laterals and inspections by village engineering, architectural and operations personnel. Separately, trustees approved Change Order #2 to the construction contract to add a fire-rated wall for $8,703 and multiple payment certificates to Ko-Bra Buildings for work performed through December 2008.

Board action: The board approved the reinspection requirement and the payment requests as work progressed, and instructed staff to ensure remedial work is inspected and documented before final acceptance. The board made clear that reinstallation would be at the contractor’s expense and that future certification would depend on passing required tests.

Next steps: Village engineering staff and McMahon will monitor repairs, require passing test results and record final closeout documentation before certifying completion and full payment.
