Sherwood approves Wannick Park storage and pavilion work, donor board and scoreboard debated

The Village of Sherwood moved forward on Wannick Choute (Wannick) Park upgrades in 2006, approving pavilion retrofit plans, selecting an elevation for a new storage building and advancing donor signage proposals.

Design and funding: Architect Paul Hemauer presented estimated costs for retrofitting an enclosed pavilion area for concessions ($~22,000) and a freestanding 24’x30’ storage building (~$52,500) to be financed with TIF funds. The PRUT Board recommended Option 3, a split‑face block storage building with double garage doors and wood trim to match the pavilion. Trustees approved Option 3 and later awarded the construction contract to Parsons Brothers after reviewing bids.

Donor board and scoreboard: PRUT favored a freestanding, cabinet‑style donor board funded by private donations; SAYSO (Sherwood Area Youth Sports Organization) agreed to purchase and install the donor cabinet. The village asked PRUT to revisit the donated scoreboard acceptance to ensure a formal maintenance and use agreement before acceptance; trustees requested an agreement template to govern private improvements to public facilities, covering insurance, maintenance and scheduling.

Why it mattered: The project bundles needed park facility improvements, supports community groups that use the park and leverages TIF funding. Trustees emphasized long‑term maintenance responsibilities, liability and equitable public access.

Next steps: Contracts were executed and a preconstruction meeting held; PRUT will draft recommended facility use and donation maintenance agreements for trustees’ review before permanent donor signage is installed.
