Canton DEI committee proposes combined Juneteenth and Pride observance on June 19

The Canton Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee on May 18 proposed holding a combined Juneteenth and Pride observance on June 19, with a flag-raising at the library and an outdoor program if weather permits. Chair (S1) and Treasurer Nicola (S5) led the planning discussion.

"This year, we feel like it's more important than ever that we band together," Nicola said, noting outreach to a potential venue, Northern Spy, and plans to invite a speaker and jazz band. The committee discussed ensuring both traditions are equally represented on the shared date and confirmed a Pride flag-raising at the library would proceed.

Committee members raised concerns about treating Juneteenth as "sacred ground" and stressed the need for respectful presentation and equitable programming for both communities. The chair said Joni will follow up on flag-raising logistics and that committee members should plan to attend and coordinate with the select board.

The committee acknowledged limited remaining funds in the current fiscal year and discussed seeking supplemental allocations or sponsorship to cover programming costs. No final vendor contracts or speaker commitments were confirmed at the meeting; Nicola said she had asked for additional allocations and would report back on venue confirmation.

Next steps: the committee will continue outreach to Northern Spy and potential speakers, confirm the flag-raising logistics with library staff, and finalize a program at a future meeting.
