CCRPC interns report summer work on pavement inspections, erosion inventories and traffic counts

Eliana Fox and Chris Dubin briefed the Transportation Advisory Committee on July 7 about summer work by CCRPC interns. Interns (J. DeRise, M. Jones, I. Warner, E. Barrese) summarized field tasks completed or underway: pavement condition inspections using the PAVER tool (completed for Huntington; Burlington inspections planned), road erosion inventories in Hinesburg and Milton, completion or support for Grants in Aid projects in Westford and Milton, and several traffic-count activities including ATR installations, turning-movement counts via camera, and manual counts.

Staff noted operational challenges: traffic-tube counters experienced both intentional cutting and accidental vehicle damage; the team used a Blackcat counter on Oak Hill Road in Williston where high speeds made tube deployment unsafe. Committee member Chris Yuen thanked staff for rapidly deploying counters in Essex Junction at short notice.

The interns’ work feeds pavement-management and inventory databases used by CCRPC and member municipalities, with a goal of repeating PAVER inspections every three years. No committee action was taken; the item was an informational update.
