Pioneers urge council to accept $50,000 CLG grant for Pioneer Hall restoration; council adds funds to museum budget

Hillary Cook, president of the Pioneers of Alaska Women and neighbor to the US Customs House (Pioneer Hall), gave a public comment urging council to adopt Resolution 26‑3026 to incorporate grant funds recently acquired through the Certified Local Government (CLG) program into the museum budget. Cook said the $50,000 CLG award will fund partial asbestos abatement and preparation work ahead of a larger restoration push, including interior structural work and a new roof. "The grant is for $50,000," she told the council, and she described matching cash contributions and coordination by local volunteers and grant managers to implement the work plan.

Council later took up and approved Resolution 26‑3026, amending the 2026 general government operating and capital budgets to provide supplemental appropriations for the museum department ($111,359) and the harbor department ($60,000). Supporters emphasized the restoration work addresses a building listed by the Alaska Association of Historic Properties as endangered and preserves an asset the Pioneers and city both use for community gatherings.

Council directed staff to incorporate the grant funds into the museum budget and to work with the Pioneers and the grant manager to ensure timely implementation of abatement and structural phases. The appropriation widens the municipal funding package for the project and signals continued city support for the downtown historic district.
