Chickasaw County VA Commission reappoints two members after reference checks and public comment

The Chickasaw County Veterans’ Affairs Commission on June 10 moved to reappoint incumbents Katy Kuehn and Richard Kottke to continue serving on the commission. Commissioner Katie Boehmer made the motion; Dean Speicher seconded. The roll call recorded yes votes from Katie Boehmer, Dean Speicher and Randy Nosbisch; Chairperson Katy Kuehn and Commissioner Richard Kottke abstained. The motion carried.

Earlier in the meeting the commission had conducted reference‑checking for applicants and temporarily tabled the matter while awaiting possible callbacks; the record notes the reference calls ended at 6:06 p.m. When the commission resumed the discussion at 6:43 p.m., it moved to nominate the two incumbents for continued service.

During the public‑comment portion of the meeting, guest Andy Boehmer addressed the commission and expressed opposition to applicant David Skilton, saying, "I don’t feel he would be a good fit for the Commission at this time," and raised a concern that two references for an applicant were members of the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors, which he said could represent a conflict of interest. Boehmer also said he believed prior statements by the applicant indicated he might attempt to remove the county VSO and the commission.

The minutes record no formal response to that public comment in the meeting text. The commission then approved the nominations and later adjourned at 7:01 p.m.
