Rules Committee forwards Chestnut Street entertainment-zone ordinance to full Board

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee on July 26 advanced an ordinance to create a Chestnut Street entertainment zone covering segments of Chestnut, Steiner, Pierce and Scott streets and directed the amended file to the full Board with a positive recommendation.

Vice Chair Supervisor Steven Sherrill told the committee he supported expanding entertainment zones after recent events, citing the Fillmore Jazz Festival’s estimated attendance of 30,000 as an example of demand and economic lift for neighborhood merchants. "We've seen the success of entertainment zones around the city," Sherrill said, adding the zones offer "flexibility for merchants" and help "boost our neighborhood corridors."

The ordinance amends Administrative Code Section 94B to establish the Chestnut Street zone and includes technical cleanup to update cross-references to the transportation code (revising Division/Section references to a unified Article 6), which Deputy City Attorney Bridal Russi said will also correct citations for previously approved entertainment zones and pending ordinances.

Clerk Victor Young called for public comment; no members of the public came forward. After the amendment was moved, the committee voted to adopt the technical changes and forward the amended file to the full Board as a committee report.

The committee record shows the planning department’s California Environmental Quality Act determination was affirmed for the ordinance. The matter will next appear before the full Board of Supervisors for consideration.
