Alachua County adopts proclamation marking June 12 Pulse Remembrance Day

On June 23 the commission read and adopted a proclamation officially recognizing June 12 as Pulse Remembrance Day in Alachua County and invited members of local organizations to speak about the tragedy and its continuing impact.

Commissioner Alford presented the proclamation, recalling the 2016 Pulse nightclub attack that claimed 49 lives and emphasizing the particular toll it took on LGBTQ and Hispanic communities. Community representatives, including a member of PFLAG and the Stonewall Democrats of Alachua County, offered brief remarks about the need to remember victims, support survivors and oppose hate.

A portion of the meeting was devoted to the reading of the victims’ names and to personal reflections from community members; commissioners and attendees also observed a moment of remembrance.

Why it matters: The proclamation joins other Florida cities and counties recognizing the anniversary and highlights county attention to LGBTQ victims of mass violence and ongoing efforts to support affected communities.
