City Council proclaims Pollinator Week, honors Bird Rock Elementary, Mark Davis and Shawna Anderson

San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved a set of proclamations recognizing Pollinator Week, marking Bird Rock Elementary School's 75th anniversary, declaring a day for longtime Oak Park librarian Mark Davis, and honoring Shawna Anderson for her service to regional river-park conservation.

The proclamations were moved and seconded during the morning session and passed unanimously with one council district absent. During public comment, James Nye, who identified himself with the San Diego Bee City initiative, told the council that "pollinators are not just a symbol of nature. They are part of our working infrastructure of healthy ecosystems," and thanked the mayor's office for supporting monarch-protection legislation. Bird Rock Principal Eric Bamitau introduced students who sang for the council as part of the school's 75th celebration.

Council members said the proclamations reflect civic values and community partnerships. Council Member Campillo, who moved the consent agenda that included the proclamations, framed Pollinator Week as a local step that aligns with state action on monarch habitat protection; Council President Joe LaCava thanked volunteers and staff who support schools and river-park work. Shawna Anderson, the retiring executive director of the local river park joint powers authority, accepted her recognition and thanked the council for support of open-space projects.

The council recessed briefly to allow photographs with the proclamation recipients before continuing the day's business. No formal policy action resulted from the proclamations; they were ceremonial recognitions placed on the record.
