Police chief honors officer and citizens who rescued three people from Lake Weatherford

Chief Jason Hayes presented awards recognizing the actions of an officer and local citizens who helped rescue three people from Lake Weatherford on March 2.

The rescue: Hayes said the Weatherford Police and Fire departments responded after reports that three people were stranded roughly 300 yards from shore in a failing inflatable raft. According to Hayes, the victims had been in the water for nearly an hour, were exhausted and were not wearing life jackets; water temperatures were described as being in the high 50s in early March.

Who was recognized: Officer Cody Atkins received the Weatherford Police Department chief’s commendation for entering the water—removing duty gear and paddling more than 100 yards to assist rescuers—and for helping bring the victims safely to shore. Hayes also presented citizenship awards to members of the local family who initially entered the water in personal kayaks to assist and who provided life preservers and shore access guidance to first responders.

Chief Hayes said the coordinated effort of citizens and first responders exemplified courage and a community commitment to protecting life; he asked the council and audience to congratulate the recipients.
