Board plans fall outreach, Native American Festival table and online "tagging" for burial-site reporting

The board discussed plans for a fall outreach event intended to broaden public awareness and gather cemetery reports across Dorchester County. Staff recommended an event location within 30 minutes of Cambridge (Bugenna) and suggested using flyers to increase participation; members proposed connecting some activities to America's 250th celebrations.

Committee members suggested creative approaches to increase participation, including a remote "tagging" campaign on social media to encourage residents to photograph and tag cemeteries or veteran graves, a hike-out event to visit remote burial sites, and a possible water-oriented activity for summer 2027. One committee member (S2) said an on-water ferry idea could be appealing: “I was thinking... a little ferry with a boat,” as a way to engage visitors during America's 250 events.

The board agreed to staff a table at the Native American Festival on Sept. 19; staff will provide logistics and an exhibitor application and members volunteered time slots to cover shifts. Members also discussed breaking coverage into two-hour increments and creating kid-friendly activities and handouts. Staff warned that the new website planned for September–October will require manual migration of content posted after July 2, so outreach materials should be planned with that timeline in mind.
