Fort Mill marks U.S. 250th with cannon firing, music and March of Honor

Fort Mill celebrated the 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4, 2026, with a community ceremony in downtown Fort Mill that included prayers from town council members, patriotic music, a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence and the traditional firing of the town’s historic cannons.

The program opened with emcee Captain Jim welcoming attendees and a flag presentation by Fort Mill High School MCJC. Town council member Alan Garrison offered an opening prayer asking for blessings on the town’s families, veterans and first responders. Town council member Ben Hudgens led the pledge of allegiance and provided a brief history of the pledge, noting Francis Bellamy’s 1892 version and the 1954 congressional addition of the words "under God." Hudgens led the crowd in reciting the pledge.

Mayor Pro Tem Ronnie Helms thanked volunteers and staff for organizing the event and reflected on the significance of the nation’s 250th anniversary, saying, "Happy 250 birthday, America," and asking that "God continue to bless the United States of America." Singer Norah Jean Fry performed the national anthem and later returned to sing "America the Beautiful."

The program included appearances by the 2026 South Carolina Strawberry Festival queens and a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by members of the Fort Mill Community Playhouse, who portrayed historical figures and read the founding document in full.

Organizers announced the town’s 54th annual firing of the cannons and a March of Honor procession led by the VFW and the American Legion. Ceremony participants and speakers described the cannons as a longstanding Fort Mill tradition; program remarks traced the pieces’ history from surplus coastal defense guns to their placement on Main Street. The emcee credited the Short family with carrying forward the tradition for decades; the Short family members fired the cannons as the crowd counted down to the salute.

A military-branches medley performed by the American Bombshells honored service members, and retired Riverview Elementary course director Billy Fox closed the program with a rendition of "God Bless the USA." The emcee concluded by thanking town staff and volunteers, including event manager Carrie Vargo, and encouraged attendees to enjoy the remainder of the holiday safely.

The ceremony was celebratory and ceremonial in nature; no official town votes or policy actions were taken during the event.
