County manager outlines transfer-station, ballfield and auditorium priorities after successful community July events

County Manager Bill Sheff told the board the county’s July 2 celebration drew more than 300 people and thanked staff and volunteers for organizing the event.

Sheff then highlighted several capital priorities: pursuing funding to renovate and modernize the county transfer station, developing two to four new ball fields in partnership with the Alleghany County School System, and upgrading an elementary-school auditorium into a small performance venue for concerts and plays. Sheff said the county will seek grants and other resources and stressed fiscal responsibility while pursuing these projects.

Commissioners praised the community events and encouraged outreach—both to residents who would use new recreation facilities and to insurers and residents after an ISO rating change for fire districts. The board also discussed related community matters such as hospital-transport logistics and upcoming events at county facilities.

Ending: The manager asked residents to stay engaged as staff seek grant funding and to expect project plans and grant-application updates in future meetings.
