Residents press for a feasibility study and volunteer help for Califon school playground; board outlines member duties

Several residents used the Oct. 15 public-comment period to press the board on a possible playground feasibility study and to ask about volunteer involvement and board service expectations.

Mr. Vreeland asked about the cost of a feasibility study and who would pay for it, and told the board that “there is a State grant for a study and that it is worth doing,” according to the minutes. Board President Christopher Keiser thanked Mr. Vreeland for the comment; no formal action on a study was recorded.

Ms. Smith said that in the past multiple districts would be involved in a feasibility study, suggesting a regional approach to planning. Ms. Pinto asked whether parents could help with playground maintenance or add new equipment and inquired about grant opportunities; she added that she loves the school. Mr. Keiser responded that PTA grants are available to add playground items.

Ms. Meiser asked about the real time commitment required to serve on the board. Board members described a schedule of monthly board meetings, service on two committees that generally meet monthly (with occasional paper work in lieu of meetings), additional meetings for negotiations committee members, mandated training, and responsibilities such as evaluating the chief school administrator and serving as delegates to county educational bodies.
