Fairfax County offers free "Fairfax Energy Compass" help for homeowners to cut energy bills

Fairfax County is promoting a free program to help homeowners reduce energy use, lower utility bills and support county climate goals, county staff said on the Consumer Connection program. “Fairfax Energy Compass is a Fairfax County program that helps homeowners reduce their home's energy use and make cost-effective improvements,” said Maggie Beatra, planner 3 with the Fairfax County Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination.

The program is designed as a one-stop guide to residential energy upgrades. Beatra told host Christine Rei of Fairfax County Consumer Affairs that residents sign up online, by email or phone, fill out a short questionnaire and then speak with an Energy Navigator who collects basic information about the home and its energy use. After the call, participants receive an email summarizing recommended upgrades, available rebates and suggested next steps, and the program can help connect homeowners with qualified contractors if they decide to move forward.

Why it matters: Local homes are among Fairfax County's largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, and household energy savings can reduce emissions, improve local air quality and ease strain on the electric grid during extreme heat or cold. Beatra said the program also helps homeowners identify cost-effective improvements that improve comfort, indoor air quality and resilience.

Who can participate and what to expect: Beatra said the program is aimed at Fairfax County homeowners in single-family detached homes and townhomes (including attached homes). Renters may be eligible for certain services if the program can partner with a landlord or property manager. Common recommendations include air sealing around windows and doors, attic or wall insulation, upgrading to high-efficiency heating and cooling such as heat pumps, replacing older water heaters, installing smart thermostats, switching to LED lighting and choosing Energy Star-rated appliances. Beatra recommended a professional home energy audit as a useful first step.

Costs and incentives: "There is no cost to homeowners to participate in Fairfax Energy Compass," Beatra said. She added that the program itself does not provide direct funding but helps residents identify and access rebates from utilities, state or federal incentives, tax credits and any available local grants or financing to reduce upfront costs.

Contractors and homeowner control: Beatra emphasized that recommendations from Fairfax Energy Compass are nonbinding. The program can provide lists of vetted, licensed contractors familiar with residential efficiency work and incentive programs, but homeowners remain free to choose their own contractor and timeline. The Energy Navigator remains available to answer questions about bids, technologies and next steps.
