A presenter from Dubuque City Public Works said the city maintains roughly 319 miles of gravity sewer main and about 183 miles of storm pipe and described how crews respond to blockages and carry out inspections.

The presenter said the public works sewer crew answers calls year-round when residents report sewer problems. "When a sewer line is blocked, problems surface. Fast," the presenter said, warning that blockages can cause street flooding and wastewater to back up into homes.
Crews use a combination of inspection cameras and high-pressure jetting to find and clear clogs. "We jet the pipes," the presenter said, adding that crews use a vac truck capable of blasting nearly 3,000 psi of water to break through obstructions. The presenter said crews also carry different nozzles for varying conditions and send CCTV cameras into pipes to get real-time views that guide repairs, including cutter inline pipe repairs when needed.
The presenter framed the work as protecting public and environmental health and keeping wastewater moving toward treatment. He also warned of hazards above ground: jetting and maintenance often put staff in the middle of traffic. "So when you see the sewer crew on the job, slow down, stay alert and help keep them safe," the presenter said, noting crews try to cone off work zones but that sometimes a crew member must walk into an intersection during maintenance.
The presenter said the department responds day or night, rain or shine, and follows protocols to inspect lines and begin clearing blockages upon receiving reports. The presentation closed with a safety reminder for drivers and residents to give crews space while they work.
