Council approves state agreement to resurface West Talis Street with Wetumpka match of $243,000

Wetumpka’s City Council voted July 6 to enter an agreement with the State of Alabama to resurface West Talis Street and make associated sidewalk improvements from State Route 14 (River Parkway) to North Bridge Street.

Mr. Payton, who discussed the project during the meeting, said the funding follows an 80% state to 20% local split and that "Our part will be 243,000." He told council members recent changes have accelerated the timetable and officials expect the project to move forward in the coming weeks.

Council members and staff emphasized the project qualified for the federal/state funding stream because West Talis is a connector between state routes within the city. A councilmember serving as vice-chair of the metropolitan planning organization explained the MPO channels federal dollars to projects that link state routes through local jurisdictions, which is why West Talis was eligible.

The council moved, seconded and approved Resolution 2026-7-6-1 with no opposition recorded. The resolution authorizes the city to enter the agreement with the state; the council did not provide a detailed construction schedule in the meeting record.

Next steps include finalizing the state agreement and coordinating with the MPO and contractor scheduling; Mr. Payton said staff will look to move the project forward once the paperwork and scheduling align.
