City pursues license-plate readers, cameras and a west-side police/firer satellite to address thefts near Market at Olive

University City police and city staff told the council they are advancing several public-safety initiatives aimed at the Loop and Market at Olive retail areas, including grant applications for new license-plate readers (LPRs), purchase of surveillance cameras and the possible use of mobile surveillance trailers.

A police captain said the department applied for grant funding through the Blue Shield program to help pay for new LPRs and cameras targeted at development and high-activity retail corridors. "The chief has applied for grant money through the Blue Shield program to help pay for new license plate readers and surveillance cameras throughout the city," the captain said, noting the department also is exploring EDRST and other sources to fund a broader deployment.

Councilors and staff also discussed identifying property for a west-side police and fire satellite facility to stage patrols and position some fire equipment closer to the Market at Olive area. Staff cited an uptick in vehicle thefts and the desire to provide patrol presence that does not have to start in the downtown area. Construction of the existing police and court annex is on schedule to be completed and operational by April 2026; a dedication plaque is being scheduled for December 8.

What happens next: police will continue grant pursuit and coordination with economic-development partners to finance equipment; staff will refine site options and timelines for a west-side satellite facility and bring those to council when additional information is available.
