The Somerton Elementary District Board of Trustees voted at its noon meeting to cancel the special bond election that had been scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026 and to repeal the May 12, 2026 resolution that had ordered that election.
Board members moved and approved a resolution to cancel the election after staff presented the recommendation that the district “decided not to move forward with a bond election in November of this year,” and that the district would “pursue a bond at a future date,” according to Mr. Alonso, who presented the item.
The board debated timing briefly after a trustee asked whether "next time around" meant next year or further out; Mr. Alonso replied the district intends to seek a bond at a future date but did not provide a firm schedule. When asked how the public would be notified, Mr. Alonso said the cancellation is part of the public record and noted that the district’s meeting videos are available on YouTube.
A motion to adopt the resolution canceling the Nov. 3, 2026 special bond election was moved by Mr. Gallegos and seconded by Christina Clark. The board approved the motion by voice vote; the chair declared, “Motion carries.” The transcript records affirmative responses from those present and the motion passed. The resolution repeals the board’s May 12, 2026 action that had ordered and called the special bond election.
Following the vote, the board approved a motion to adjourn, seconded by Gladys Anaya; the meeting concluded with members exchanging farewells.
The board did not specify a new target date for a future bond election or provide a detailed public outreach schedule beyond the note that the action is public record and district videos are posted online. The district’s May 12, 2026 resolution that called the Nov. 3 election was identified in the motion but no additional legal citations or funding figures were provided during the discussion.
