PV EDC reports Opportunity Zone nomination submitted; board highlights letters of support

Board members updated the EDC on a federal Opportunity Zone nomination that the city submitted to the governor’s office. The application targets a track that wraps near the university and stretches toward Old/New 290 and Owens Road; directors described the submission as federal rather than state-run and said the state selects the 25% of tracts it advances.

Directors noted the packet included locally relevant materials — a livable center study excerpt, diagrams of trade-point 290, letters of support (including one from then-representative Cecil Bell and the Prairie View mayor), and a letter of support the EDC sent to the university for a workforce initiative. The board thanked staff and volunteers who assembled the packet and encouraged continued advocacy and outreach (including additional letters from landowners and local representatives) while awaiting the state’s selection.
