Committee places Maplewood/Dennett crosswalk study on file; DPW declines flashing lights for now

DPW presented the results of a speed and 100-hour video study at the Maplewood Avenue crosswalk by Dennett and recommended no additional countermeasures at this time.

"The speed study came back showing average speeds are 26 miles an hour on Maplewood in the area with 85th percentile at 30 miles an hour," DPW staff Eric reported, adding that the posted speed is 25 mph and that most vehicle speeds are close to that posting. The video study recorded roughly 100 hours of observation and found only one hour with 20 or more pedestrian crossings (during a downtown parade); the typical rate was about six crossings per hour.

Based on those data points and observed yielding behavior, Eric said the current signage and flex-post devices were appropriate and he did not recommend adding flashing beacons at the site.

A committee member moved to place the report on file; the committee approved the motion by voice vote. Members and staff discussed adding an advance "crosswalk ahead" sign at Prospect Street to warn drivers coming off the highway and noted staff will consider whether an additional advance sign is warranted without over-signing the corridor.

The DPW also noted the crosswalk will be considered in a planned sidewalk/water project in FY 2028, when intersection geometry and sight distance will be revisited.
