Carmel celebrates America’s 250th and the city’s 50th at Allied Solutions Carmel Fest parade

Carmel — Thousands of residents and visitors packed downtown Carmel on July 4 as the Allied Solutions Carmel Fest parade marked both the nation’s 250th anniversary and Carmel’s 50th year as a city.

Paul Mandanell, one of the morning’s hosts, opened the live broadcast and directed viewers to the parade livestream on CBS4 and Fox59. “Good morning, everyone, and welcome to our this fabulous celebration, the Carmel Fest 4th of July Independence Day Parade,” he said, encouraging audience enthusiasm for the procession.

The parade featured a mix of community groups, sponsors and celebrity appearances. Nancy Heck, president of the Rotary Club of Carmel, said the Rotary stepped in to organize Carmel Fest in 2004 and credited volunteers for keeping the festival running year after year: “Anyone that has a Carmel Fest shirt on or a volunteer shirt on, give them a thanks,” she said. Allied Solutions, this year’s premier sponsor, sent about 30 employees and family members to march while carrying a large American flag, a company representative said.

Local dignitaries and honorees took part in the program. Mayor Sue Finkham thanked residents for braving the heat and praised the parade’s longevity as a community tradition. Rob Brown, introduced as this year’s grand marshal “Mister 1776,” reflected on being born and raised in Carmel and urged spectators to enjoy the fireworks and festivities; he told the broadcast, “09:45 is when the show will begin, and I hope to see you all there.” A Benjamin Franklin reenactor added historical color during an on-air exchange about the Constitution and the origins of Independence Day.

Miss Indiana Elise Edwards, crowned about two weeks earlier, said meeting parade-goers was among the highlights of her new role: “It makes me so deeply proud to be a Hoosier,” she said, describing the experience of posing for photos and connecting with children.

The parade also included tributes to public safety and veterans. The Indiana State Police Aviation Unit piloted a ceremonial ride for Officer of the Year Bob Locke, and the show closed with a military tribute that featured veterans’ groups, military vehicles and an escort of Crossroads Corvette Club vehicles providing rides for veterans.

Organizers and broadcasters highlighted safety and on-site services: Community Health Network staffed a first-aid station for attendees handling the heat, and volunteers coordinated cleanup after the festival. Hosts thanked partners including Allied Solutions, Rising Tide Media, Flanner & Buchanan and local businesses that provided food and logistical support.

The broadcast described a flyover by F-16s from the Fort Wayne-based Indiana Air National Guard as a highlight and noted other family attractions — the Rotary Club’s 10-person bicycle, a mechanical bull nicknamed Buford (a free ride this year honoring the late parade chair Jeff Lenz), and floats from schools and nonprofit groups. The parade concluded with closing remarks from the hosts and reminders about evening fireworks planned to begin at 9:45 p.m.

Organizers asked attendees to remain hydrated in hot conditions and expressed particular thanks to the volunteers, parade coordinators and civic organizations who staged the multi-hour event.
