City and U.S. Army Corps say Hesko Phase 1 nearly complete; work set to finish by July 15

The City and Borough of Juneau and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that Phase 1 of the Hesko Reconstruction Project is nearly complete and that Phase 2 is on track, with work on the project scheduled to finish by July 15.

A City and Borough of Juneau official said the agencies have "been working together" for months and noted progress on Phase 1. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers official described the remaining work and schedule, saying, "From bank armoring to structural repairs and raising of the Hesko barriers to drainage improvements, our work is set to be complete by July 15th." The Corps official also warned residents they "may see CBJ staff inspecting the barriers and preparing for a possible 2026 flood event" and urged people to "stay clear of the barriers, especially during the flood event." Residents were asked to report any damage to floodresponse@juneau.gov.

The City and Borough of Juneau official thanked residents for their cooperation and partnership as crews completed the work and directed the public to CBJ's flood mitigation page at juneau.gov for additional details about this and other projects. The officials did not announce any formal vote or budget action during the update.

Next steps include continued inspections by CBJ staff and monitoring of the site through the July 15 completion target; officials encouraged anyone who sees damage to email the city at floodresponse@juneau.gov.
