Des Moines parks manager urges residents to leave fireworks out of city parks

Mike Gaul, parks manager with the City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department, said, "Fireworks simply are not permitted in our park system." He urged residents to leave fireworks at home and warned that illegal use has damaged facilities and created fire and cleanup hazards.

Gaul said the department has seen surfaces scorched, fires started in trash receptacles and fireworks debris left across fields and amenities. He said past incidents forced the temporary closure of a restroom after ignition of fireworks and damaged the surfacing of spray grounds, leaving children unable to use those features.

Those incidents, Gaul said, have required extra cleanup and repair, and the department appreciates the Police Department and volunteers who help remove debris. He emphasized keeping parks "clean, safe, and available for everyone to use this 4th of July."

The parks manager did not announce new enforcement measures or cite specific fines in his remarks. He closed by asking residents to enjoy fireworks at home so park facilities remain open and safe for families.
