Danville School Board appoints Regina L. Covington as principal of O.T. Bonner Middle School

The Danville School Board voted unanimously to approve Regina L. Covington as principal of O.T. Bonner Middle School during a special called meeting.

Dr. Harris introduced Covington to the board, citing more than 20 years in K–12 education and experience in instructional leadership. "I bring to you this evening Regina L. Covington," he said, and recommended her for the position, noting her role as assistant principal at Westwood Middle School and prior service at American History High School and Forsyth Technical Community College.

Ms. McLaughlin moved to approve the recommendation; Dr. Williams seconded. The clerk called the roll and each board member voted yes.

Covington, who is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with an anticipated graduation in spring 2027, introduced family members in the meeting chamber after the vote. "This is my two daughters, too," she said, naming Freya and Erica, and received applause and congratulations from board members.

Separately, the board considered personnel recommendations presented by Ms. Wimberly. Ms. Wimberly said she was "happy to answer any questions you may have." Ms. Walker asked that one personnel item — identified in the transcript as case 31 — be pulled for separate consideration. Mr. Payne moved, and Dr. Williams seconded, to approve the remaining personnel recommendations; the board voted unanimously in favor.

Near the end of the session a board member moved that the board "immediately convene in closed meeting" to discuss prospective candidates for employment, assignment, promotion, performance, demotion, salaries and discipline. The transcript records the motion and enumerates the permitted topics for the closed session but ends before a recorded vote to enter closed session appears.
