Resident tells Lumberton committee a motorcycle death exposes hazardous Heirstown–Landing Road intersection

At the Lumberton Township Committee meeting on July 2, a public commenter identifying himself as Paul described a recent fatal motorcycle crash at the intersection of Heirstown and Landing Road and urged township or county officials to improve lighting and sightlines to prevent future accidents.

"There was a senseless accident that occurred on Heirstown and Landing Road where a young man driving a motorcycle died," the commenter said, and described the approach as a bend with obscured sightlines. He said the stop sign placement forces drivers to move forward into the intersection to see oncoming traffic and recommended better lighting or a four‑way blinking signal.

Peter Damato, who said he lives on Municipal Drive and represents Action Together Burlington County, supported the safety concern as a cyclist and urged the township to investigate traffic patterns and accident history at the intersection. Damato also raised separate concerns about wrecked vehicles stored in the emergency services parking lot, saying leaking fluids can damage pavement and pose a hazard; committee members said the liaison to fire and EMS would discuss the storage and any leaks with the fire chief.

Township officials acknowledged the comments but did not commit to a specific safety measure at the meeting. Mayor Benson and committee members thanked the speakers and said staff would review the issues raised; no formal traffic‑safety action or timeline was announced.
