Annette Matthew elected president as Valley Stream UFSD 24 board completes reorganization

Annette Matthew, president of the Valley Stream Union Free School District 24 Board of Education, was elected board president at the district’s reorganization meeting after a roll-call style vote that produced four yes votes and three no votes.

The nomination was put by Matthew, who nominated herself, and after the vote she was sworn in by the board. In a subsequent election for vice president, Trustee Aisha Derby prevailed with a four-to-three vote over Marcus Wilson.

The board approved several appointments tied to the reorganization. Item 10 appoints Brian Cleary as district treasurer for the 2026–27 school year at an annual salary of $16,000; Cleary was not present, and the board recorded that he must take the oath within 30 days. The board also appointed Trustee John Mayer to serve as acting district treasurer whenever the treasurer is absent or unable to serve.

Trustees were named to the Valley Stream Central High School District Board of Education and the district audit committee. The audit committee appointments—Alyssa Clark, John Mayer, Marcus Wilson, Annette Matthew, Thomas Dowling, Aisha Derby and Salman Kadar—were adopted on the superintendent’s recommendation.

As part of routine reorganization business the board adopted pay rates for election inspectors and other registry positions, and assigned board committee leadership: Education (Annette Matthew); Finance (Salman Kadar); Policy (Thomas Dowling, Alyssa Clark, Salman Kadar); Legislation (Thomas Dowling); and Personnel (Marcus Wilson and Annette Matthew). The board moved several groups of agenda items by consent and voted to approve grouped items in bulk.

Most motions were adopted by voice or roll-call as noted on the record. Several trustees cast recorded no votes during officer elections, but the motions for appointments and committee assignments carried. The board concluded the reorganization work and resumed its regular business meeting agenda.
