Residents urge removal of Selby Lane bike proposals citing school traffic; council requests audit

Multiple residents told the committee that Selby Lane has become congested with parent drop‑off and through traffic after program changes at the nearby school, and said they oppose introducing bicycle facilities that would reduce parking or otherwise alter the street character.

A resident said, "Atherton did nothing. So, they changed that school totally from a neighborhood school ... It is now a Spanish immersion school and all the children are young and they're all driven there," and described morning congestion and unsafe vehicle movements at pickups. Council members said the school is run by the Redwood City School District and that the town lacked full data on how students currently travel to school during the year. Several council members supported conducting a walk audit during the school year to collect balanced data from parents, students and the district before making a final plan decision.

The committee agreed that the plan should reflect current conditions and that the item could be revisited before the five‑year update if the school’s age composition or travel patterns change. For now, the public feedback will be recorded and staff will include an audit recommendation in the draft for future review.
