Orange Village council authorizes Motorola camera purchase after vendor discontinues support for older models

The Orange Village Council voted to authorize the mayor to sign a notice to proceed with Motorola Solutions Inc. for replacement of the village’s body-worn and in-vehicle camera systems after the vendor said it would no longer support the current model and replacement batteries are unavailable.

Law director Steve explained that Motorola has discontinued supply and support for the current body-camera model, including replacement batteries the village had been purchasing at roughly one battery per officer per year. Because the vendor will not supply parts for the existing system, the village must replace the equipment to maintain its camera program. To accommodate vendor timing, the council agreed to take delivery of equipment now and pay in 2027.

Steve said the proposed contract includes an equipment "refresh" mechanism: roughly two and a half years into the agreement the vendor will offer a new batch of hardware (the timing can be adjusted at about year two or year four), with the village returning the used fleet. The contract term and renewal cadence were discussed; Steve said the arrangement effectively covers two batches of equipment within a five‑year planning horizon, and that a new agreement would be needed after the contract ends.

The motion to authorize the mayor to sign the notice to proceed passed on a roll-call vote. Anna called the roll and members recorded 'yes' votes (Kurland; Boil; Bilski; Foster; Benson; Perry). The motion passed by the council vote recorded at the meeting.

The contract cost figure was read aloud during the meeting but the transcript contains conflicting figures (the motion language recorded “not to exceed 50,000 uh $88312” and an audible reading of "57,88312"). The council record should be consulted for the official contract amount; staff indicated payment will be scheduled for 2027 and delivery timing for early 2026.
