The DeSoto Parish School Board paused regular business on July 2 to recognize a state championship win by a student culinary team coached by Miss Amy Alam.
The board invited the students to describe the contest. School staff explained the 'food challenge' requires teams to prepare a MyPlate‑standard dish using a secret ingredient in 40 minutes, plus deliver a five‑to‑eight‑minute presentation to judges on nutrition, safety and cost. Students identified their roles: Cooper Hatcher handled the presentation and MyPlate standards, Cougar Boyd covered cost analysis and meal preparation, Riker explained nutritional knowledge, and Cash Wheelis described food and kitchen safety.
Coach and other attendees asked the students about their dishes and judged criteria; the board presented certificates and commended the young chefs for hard work and community representation. "We are the menu masters," one student quipped, to laughter and applause.
The recognition was accompanied by applause from board members and the public; the superintendent and board thanked Miss Alam for her work with students across the district.
